All Natural Flea Control
In the uphill battle that is flea control, there are many products on the market that are effective. Many of these products contain neurotoxins such as organophosphates and carbamares that can make your dog and your family very ill.
For many years harsh chemical were all that was available. Now there are many safe and effective alternative methods for getting rid of them. When shopping look for natural pesticides that contain pyrethrin or d-Limonene, both are derived from plants. Diatomaceous earth is fossilized algae that resemble chalk dust. The fine particles have very sharp edges that can penetrate a their exoskeleton, causing it to dehydrate and die.
Try shampooing your dog with a mild soap, drowning fleas and condition the skin with a lemon rinse to help repel them. Make the lemon rinse by dropping a whole sliced lemon in hot water and letting it sit overnight. You can find alternative sprays in health food stores that contain citronella, rosemary or wormwood. Adding garlic to your dog’s diet may help repel them. Crush one to three fresh garlic cloves in with regular food everyday.
Perhaps the best defense is to keep your dog healthy and well-groomed. Good nutrition can help keep the coat healthy, irritated skin is attractive to them; they don’t have to work as hard to get a meal.
Remember that when trying to get rid of them it’s important to find and clean the damp and dark places around your home where they actually breed.
