Common Signs of Kennel Cough in Puppies

Kennel cough is a common, highly contagious, and very infectious disease that can affect puppies and dogs of all ages. The virus settles in and affects the upper respiratory system. Being able to recognize kennel cough in puppies is important. The sooner you see the signs, the sooner you can seek professional assistance and the infection can be treated.

One of the telltale signs of this infection is a hacking, dry cough. Coughing will occur frequently. It will sound different from a human cough, but the goal is similar. The cough is caused by a need to dislodge phlegm from the lungs and the throat. Sometimes the couch will be followed by a retching or honking noise.

Another common symptom is a fever. Fever is a common symptom of more than just kennel cough, but it does pop up as a sign of this condition. A fever is generally a sign that the infection is getting worse, not better. If you notice a fever, notify your vet straight away.

Lethargy is another common sign of this condition in puppies. Think about it. When you or I get sick we tend to get lazy simply because we do not feel food. The same can happen to a puppy. Thus, lethargy is a common sign of kennel cough in puppies. If you notice a cough combined with your pup slowing down, it is definitely time to take a trip to your vet.
