Recognizing Kennel Cough Symptoms in Dogs
Kennel cough is a common, highly contagious, and very infectious disease that can affect puppies and dogs of all ages. The virus settles in and affects the upper respiratory system. Being able to recognize kennel cough symptoms in dogs is important. The sooner you see the signs, the sooner you can seek professional assistance and the infection can be treated.
The most common and recognizable symptom of this infection is a dry cough. Many veterinarians can diagnose the infection simply by hearing this cough. The cough is distinct. It will sound like a dry hacking sometimes followed by a honking or retching sound.
You can also recognize kennel cough symptoms in dogs by looking for some other telltale signs. For example, a dog might show symptoms that include eye discharge, a runny nose or watery discharge from the nose, and/or sneezing. A general loss of appetite and a notable decrease in energy are not signs of this respiratory infection.
Sneezing can be tough to pinpoint as a symptom in small dogs. Many small dogs sound like they sneeze when they cough. This sound is actually referred to as a reverse sneeze and is normal in some dogs.
If you think your dog might have kennel cough it is important to separate them from other pets and take them to see their veterinarian as soon as possible. The telltale cough caused by the virus produces airborne transportation allowing it to move about and infect other pets. The sooner treatment is sought and administered, the sooner your pet can experience some amount of reprieve.
Four primary factors are causes behind catching this virus:
• Cold temperatures
• Exposure to poorly ventilated and/or crowded conditions, such as when being boarded or in a shelter
• Exposure to cigarette smoke and/or dust
• Travel-induced stress
You can provide some amount of relief for your dog with simple home remedies. Vitamin C (ask your veterinarian for proper dosage information), 1 to 2 teaspoons of honey, and even chicken noodle soup can all provide some amount of relief for your four legged friend. The sooner you recognize kennel cough symptoms in your dogs the sooner you can seek assistance, and thus the sooner the infection can be treated.
